How UnscrambleIt Processes Letter Jumbles

When you enter a set of letters into UnscrambleIt, our engine doesn't simply guess it runs a precise, multi-stage matching process against a pre-indexed word database.

Pattern Matching Logic

At its core, the engine analyzes the frequency and combination of each letter in your input. Every word in our dictionary is pre-indexed at startup, so when your query arrives, the system instantly cross-references your letters against thousands of valid words eliminating non-matches in fractions of a second. This is why results appear almost instantly, even for complex 8–10 letter combinations. You can enter up to 12 letters at once, including two wild cards or blank tiles, to make full use of this.

Wildcard & Blank Tile Handling

Blank tiles are a reality in Scrabble and Words With Friends, and UnscrambleIt handles them natively. Use the "Must Include" field to represent a blank tile simply enter the letter you want the blank to act as, and the engine factors it into every possible combination. For advanced users, pattern-based search is also available: entering "...le" returns every valid 5-letter word ending in -le, with the dots standing in for any letter especially useful for solving Wordle puzzles or filling specific board positions in Scrabble.

Filtering & Ranking

Once matching words are found, UnscrambleIt doesn't just return a random list results are sorted intelligently. By word length: longer words appear first, so you can spot high-value plays immediately. By game score: each word is automatically scored using the official point values of your selected game (Scrabble or Words With Friends) high-value letters like Q, Z, X, and J are always highlighted. By dictionary: results are filtered to only show words valid in your chosen dictionary (NWL2023 for US Scrabble, CSW24 for International, or WWF). This layered ranking means you always see your best possible play at the top no scrolling, no guessing.

Tip: under "Options," you can filter results by "Starts With," "Ends With," or "Must Include" handy for words longer than 5 letters or whenever you're using wildcards. Use this filter carefully, since combining the wrong letters can return no valid words at all. Filters reset with every search, but your dictionary preference (the default is NWL2023/TWL, with SOWPODS/CSW24 available as an alternative) is saved for next time.
Our Story UnscrambleIt

The Story Behind UnscrambleIt

Building for word game lovers since 2021.

As active Scrabble players, we kept running into the same frustrations with the solvers already out there outdated word lists, slow load times, ad clutter getting in the way, and scoring that didn't quite line up with the game we were actually playing. Finding a reliable answer for a tricky letter combination took far more effort than it should have.

UnscrambleIt launched on January 2, 2021. I partnered with my younger brother, and together we set out to fix this properly, engineering a lightweight, sub-millisecond anagram engine from the ground up.

Helping players work through tough board positions was only half of it. We wanted UnscrambleIt to double as an educational resource, something enthusiasts, students, and competitive players could use to discover rare hook words and genuinely expand their vocabulary along the way.
